“Venus Apple’s market performance is unexpected”

As a new apple variety that has become popular in the market in recent years, the planting area of Venus apple is growing rapidly, and the output in some production areas is dozens of times higher than last year. Weihai, Shandong, a core production area, has also increased production, and the overall output has increased significantly this season.

"Thanks to the good weather and improved planting technology, this season's Venus apples have a high overall Brix, good taste and ideal quality." Mr. Huang Linqing from Weihai Fifty-One Farm Co., Ltd. ("Huangpangzi" Venus Apple) introduced. "The fruit size this season is smaller, with only 30% reaching #80 size, which is 10%-20% less than before. In addition, the area of apple scar skins is slightly larger than before, with more scattered scars. However, it seems that the market has now accepted the problem, and the sales of infected fruits are also smooth."

"Market feedback this year has been very positive and exceeded expectations. From the time the fruits were off the trees, a large number of merchants went to various producing areas to purchase apples. The supply of apples exceeded demand, and many bases were quickly out of stock. In Weihai, the main production area, Venus apples are out of stock in most bases, except for a few big brands and large bases that still have stocks."

"However, this market phenomenon is incomprehensible. I was originally bearish on the market this year because many items were in poor condition. When the season started and a large number of merchants went to the production areas to snap up purchases, I was surprised. After that, in the communication with various channels and market stalls, I learned that the actual market situation was close to my expectations, and the sales were not active. The advantage is that the price is relatively stable. This year's market characteristics are that base supply exceeds demand, but market sales have not met expectations."

"Where are the large quantities of apples now? Have they slowly flowed to the end market, or are they still in the hands of dealers? How big is the inventory? These situations are not yet clear."

As for the reasons why merchants are rushing to buy, according to Huang, one possibility is that Venus apples have become popular in the market in recent years. Therefore, in addition to the common large wholesalers and dealers, some hierarchical wholesale markets or relatively small-scale traders also go directly to the place of origin to purchase goods. “Perhaps some smaller merchants can sell apples smoothly through their channels.”

Another reason may be related to the fact that Venus apples came off the trees late this year. "Each base waits until the fruit quality reaches the standard before picking, and the harvest time is late. For many bases, this year there are only 20 days to a month from harvest to completion of the supply, and they have been sold out before waiting for market reaction. The quality of Venus apples this year is indeed better than before.”

It is understood that the starting price of Venus apples this season has increased by about 8%-15% compared with previous years, which is relatively stable and the increase is smaller than that of conventional apple varieties.

Weihai Fifty-One Farm Co., Ltd. sells Venus apples under the brand name "Huangpangzi". The company has a planting base of about 200 hectares, and its channels include wholesale market stalls, supermarkets, fruit chain stores, and online sales. "Currently, our base can still supply apples continuously. Future development will focus on controlling output and advancing steadily."
