Queensland is on high alert for a possible second tropical cyclone within a month's span. The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a warning of a "significant risk" that a tropical low could escalate into a storm and strike the east coast as early as the coming week.
It has been slightly over a month since Tropical Cyclone Jasper hit the northern part of the state, causing heavy rainfall and widespread flooding across the tropics. Current forecasts indicate a storm brewing in the Coral Sea might intensify into a tropical cyclone by Monday.
The Bureau of Meteorology cautioned that the impact could be "severe" for communities along the east coast. The storms are expected to gain strength over the weekend, potentially developing into a tropical cyclone by Monday.
"There is a significant risk that this system may impact the Queensland coast from later Tuesday onwards next week," warned the Bureau's cyclone alert, adding that "A severe impact is possible." Already, clouds and rain have started to circulate approximately 600 kilometers off the northeast coast of Queensland. However, there remains a high degree of uncertainty regarding the trajectory and intensity of the potential cyclone.
