Pakistan's onion price hike linked to export decisions, says Ministry of Commerce

According to sources within the Ministry of Commerce, the recent surge in onion prices in Pakistan can be attributed to the country's export decisions. Despite a shortage of onions, 600,000 tons of the commodity were exported this year, leading to a domestic shortfall and subsequent price increase.

Domestic onion production this year was reported at 2.5 million tons, falling short of the 3.5 to 4 million tons required annually. The decision to export local onions has sparked a crisis, with onions now selling at Rs 250 per kg instead of the usual Rs 100.

Agri Forum President Ibrahim Mughal has urged for an increase in the annual yield of onions to five million tons. He held the ministries of production and commerce accountable for the price hike and called for an investigation into the export decision. Commerce Ministry sources have since announced a ban on onion exports, prioritizing domestic needs.
