Director of the Plant Protection Department, Huynh Tan Dat, has indicated that the recently signed protocol for the export of Vietnamese watermelons to China will mitigate trade risks and enhance product standards.
Recently, Dat noted that this agreement will foster stronger connections between growers, packaging facilities, and exporters in the long run. This will encourage the standardization of production, the implementation of good farming practices, the incorporation of scientific and technological developments, and the creation of high-quality, eco-friendly products, all of which will contribute to the sustainable export of watermelons.
The protocol, signed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) and General Administration of Customs China (GACC), stipulates that fresh watermelons allowed into China must originate from cultivation and processing establishments approved by both organizations. All participating plantations must adhere to Good Agricultural Practices (GAP).
Negotiations for the agreement began in late 2019 and was signed in December of the same year. Vietnam has now finalized all procedures for watermelon exports to China. As a result, Dang Phuc Nguyen, Secretary General of the Vietnam Fruit & Vegetables Association, anticipates that the annual export value of this produce could increase from 50 million USD to 70-80 million USD.
