Taiwan's TFDA plans to ease restrictions on Japanese strawberries

The Taiwan Food and Drug Administration (TFDA) is set to relax its restrictions on four pesticides, commonly used in Japan on strawberry crops. This decision comes following frequent halts of Japanese strawberry imports during customs checks at Taiwan's border due to violations of the country's pesticide residue standards.

In response, the Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association, BASF Taiwan, and the South Korean Mission in Taipei have requested Taiwan to ease its ban on acequinocyl, chlorfenapyr, flonicamid, and mefentriflucon azole. The TFDA has agreed to increase the allowable residual levels of these pesticides on strawberries.

These proposed revisions were made public for feedback over a 60-day period. The easing of these restrictions is anticipated to smooth the path for Japanese strawberry imports, which have experienced numerous infringements since late last year.

TFDA Deputy Director-General Lin Chin-fu explained that this decision was based on an assessment of Japan's climate and environment conditions. The agency is currently gathering public opinions and has not yet set a timeline for implementing these revised pesticide standards.
