Iranian onions do not alleviate consumer woes in Pakistan

The introduction of Iranian onions in the Pakistani market has not alleviated consumer difficulties, with prices ranging from Rs200-240 per kg, despite subpar taste and quality. Traders report that consumers generally avoid these imports due to their inability to compete with the quality of local onions.

Interestingly, despite this, onion exporters have been capitalizing on high international demand, exporting large quantities to the Far East, UAE, and Sri Lanka. This is following a ban imposed by India on its own exports in December 2023, which is set to last until March 2024.

However, the Pakistani government's decision to raise the minimum export price (MEP) on onion exports from $750 to $1,200 per ton in an attempt to lower local prices has proven counterproductive for consumers. Some retailers have even been seen selling high-quality local onions at Rs300 per kg, claiming it to be of export quality.
