As the new garlic season commences, a significant reduction in garlic prices has been observed, with a marked decrease by half. This price drop is attributed to the increased supply from Madhya Pradesh, leading to a notable dip in prices. Previously, consumers faced garlic prices peaking at Rs 400 per kg, but the onset of the new season has seen prices fall to a range of Rs 200 to 250 per kg in the retail sector.
The reduction in price is concurrent with the daily market entry of 20 to 30 tons of garlic since the new season's start. Additionally, a shift in garlic cultivation in Maharashtra has increased reliance on imports, with Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Gujarat emerging as key garlic-producing states. A spokesperson from a Pune market yard highlighted the increased garlic arrivals from Madhya Pradesh and projected a continued price decline in the coming months, following the pattern of post-cold weather garlic seasons in other states.
