Dubai customs intercept marijuana in red onion shipments

Customs officials in Dubai thwarted an attempt to smuggle 26kg of marijuana hidden within red onion bags. The discovery was made after officers, suspecting the air freight shipments based on known smuggling patterns, employed advanced X-ray technology that revealed unusual densities in the cargo from an African nation. A detailed manual inspection of the shipments confirmed the presence of marijuana, with quantities of 14.85kg and 11.6kg found in two separate consignments.

Mohamed Al Suwaidi, senior manager at Cargo Village Customs Centre, highlighted the operation's success as evidence of Dubai Customs' advanced capabilities in protecting the emirate's borders. This incident underscores the ongoing investment in training and technology, including sophisticated X-ray machines, to combat sophisticated smuggling tactics. Additionally, recent enforcement actions by Dubai Customs include the arrest of an individual for attempting to smuggle 6.5kg of hashish in his car and the detention of a passenger for concealing 3.2kg of cocaine in a body belt.
