Rambutan is predominately grown in the southeast and southwest regions of Vietnam, the production season runs from May to August.
"The fruit grows best in temperatures between 22-35 degrees, which is not a problem in Vietnam; what is more important is the water," explains Ly Nguyen, Sales Executive at Van Xuan Agri. "Vietnam's climate is hot almost all year round, so having enough water for irrigating the rambutan trees is essential."
In Vietnam rambutan is grown on around 14,200 hectares with an output of approximately 100,000 tons.
"We supply rambutan to both the domestic and export markets. Our main export market is Korea and we have seen interest from European and New Zealand importers. We have some orders already for this year.
"We also supply frozen rambutan which we freeze as whole fruits with no peel, this retains all the juice. It is a fruit that brings a sweet and cool taste with every bite."
Van Xuan Agri grow and export a range of exotic fruit and vegetables including passion fruit, soursop, mango, corn and pineapples.
