At a recent joint press briefing, the Senior Secretary of the Commerce Ministry, Tapan Kanti Ghosh, alongside the Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh, Yao Wen, disclosed China's interest in importing mango, jackfruit, and potato from Bangladesh. This announcement came amidst discussions on a draft feasibility study report concerning a potential Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Bangladesh and China, aimed at bolstering trade and investment between the two nations.
The briefing, which saw the presence of high-ranking officials from both countries, highlighted the significance of Bangladesh's progression from a Least Developed Country (LDC) to a developing nation, as stated by Ghosh. He pointed out that while this transition heralds new investment and trade opportunities, it also brings forth challenges, such as the loss of duty-free and quota-free access to markets of developed and developing countries post-2026. Ghosh emphasized that the proposed FTA could serve as a crucial mechanism to enhance the export prospects of Bangladeshi products amidst these challenges.
The discussions on the FTA were initiated during the visit of the President of China to Bangladesh in October 2016, marking a significant step towards strengthening the trade relations between the two countries.
