The General Department of Customs reported that Vietnam's fruit and vegetable export turnover reached an estimated 1.25 billion USD in the first quarter of 2024, marking a 27% increase over the same period in 2023. The Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association (VINAFRUIT) highlighted a significant surge in the sector's earnings, with nearly 1 billion USD generated in the first two months alone, a 73% increase from the previous year. This growth indicates a positive outlook for future exports.
China, the Republic of Korea, Thailand, and Japan have been identified as major markets for Vietnamese fruits and vegetables, demonstrating sustained growth. Remarkably, Thailand's import of Vietnamese fruits and vegetables saw a 125.9% increase, reaching 28.6 million USD. This growth elevated Thailand's market share from 2% to nearly 4%. VINAFRUIT General Secretary Dang Phuc Nguyen attributed this success to the off-season durian, which is in demand in Thailand year-round, unlike the domestic supply that lasts only four months.
Projections for 2024 suggest a 15-20% growth in Vietnam's vegetable and fruit exports, potentially reaching 6.5-7 billion USD, provided that trade protocols are effectively utilized. Despite challenges in exporting to Europe and the US due to the Red Sea issue, exports to China and neighboring regions have seen a notable increase, particularly for durian, coconut, dragon fruit, jackfruit, banana, and mango.
