Thai exporters and government entities are encouraged to enhance durian exports to China, following Vietnam's ascension as the leading exporter. A report by Dan Viet highlighted that in the initial two months of this year, Vietnam captured a 57% market share in China's durian imports, a significant increase from 32% the previous year.
The report detailed: "China imported 53,110 tons of durians worth US$283.6 million in the first two months of this year." Consequently, Thailand now ranks as the second-largest durian exporter to China, with shipments totaling 19,016 tons valued at $120.3 million. Vietnam's year-round durian production, particularly during off-seasons for Thai durians, alongside its competitive pricing at US$4.916 per ton compared to Thailand's $6.133 per ton, has bolstered its market position.
Proximity to China further facilitates swift Vietnamese exports. This development aligns with the Thai Department of International Trade Promotion's December report, which identified Vietnam as China's primary durian source as of September, with Vietnam exporting 452,000 tons worth $1.94 billion to China in the first ten months of the previous year.
