As of March, fruit prices in Kazakhstan have surged by an average of 13.6% over the past year, marking one of the highest increases across the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). According to EnergyProm, grapes saw the most significant spike, soaring by 40.4%. Meanwhile, apples rose by 18.3%, pears by 17%, lemons by 11%, kiwis by 10.9%, oranges by 7.5%, and bananas by 7.2%. Overall, fresh fruits now cost 17.9% more than a year ago.
In contrast, the price hike for processed and canned fruits remained modest, averaging at 4.1% annually. Raisins surged by 9.2%, dried fruits and nuts by 4%, canned fruits and berries by 9.1%, and frozen fruits by 8.2%.
Kazakhstan has long been known for its relatively expensive fruits. Last year, it was revealed that the country had the highest apple prices in the CIS. Similar trends extend to other fruits. Analysing 95 countries, analysts found Kazakhstan ranking high in fruit prices among CIS nations.
For instance, as of April 5th, bananas averaged $2.07 per kilogram, placing Kazakhstan 21st in the ranking. Oranges were priced around $2.32 per kilogram, securing the 30th position. Despite apples being cheaper at $1.35 per kilogram, Kazakhstan ranked 77th, still notably higher compared to its CIS counterparts. These price fluctuations occur against the backdrop of decreased fruit harvests in 2023, potentially contributing to the price surge.
