In the Northwest of Malaysia, the Perak government is set to expand its agricultural endeavors with the development of a BAW-1 red onion cultivation project in Perak Tengah, targeting an area of approximately 40 hectares.
This initiative follows the successful implementation of a similar project in Sungkai. The Perak State Agricultural Development Corporation (Perak SADC), in partnership with the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Mardi), will spearhead this venture. Datuk Mohd Zolkafly Harun highlighted that the project aims to utilize land in Lambor for red onion cultivation, contributing to the state's ambition of becoming a local red onion production hub. Furthermore, the project is expected to satisfy the state's demand for red onions and may extend to other districts with suitable cultivation conditions.
Despite challenges posed by the hot weather and the El NiƱo phenomenon, agricultural and livestock production in Perak remains unaffected, with no significant reports of weather-related issues from farmers or breeders.
