In Binh Thuan, Tien Giang, and Long An provinces of Vietnam, the pricing of dragon fruit has seen a significant adjustment. For type 1 dragon fruit, the cost exceeds VND40,000 per kg, with type 2 and type 3 fruits priced between VND35,000 - VND38,000 and VND30,000 - VND33,000 per kg respectively. This marks an increase of VND10,000 - VND15,000 per kg from March. Despite the profit margin of nearly VND20,000 per kg for farmers, the yield has been impacted due to drought and water scarcity.
The domestic market reflects a tripling in dragon fruit prices. As reported by the Management Board of Binh Dien Agricultural Wholesale Market, prices range from VND25,000 - VND30,000 per kg for Long An province's produce, and VND30,000 - VND37,000 per kg for Binh Thuan's. Dang Phuc Nguyen, General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, attributes the price surge to China's increased importation from December to April, peaking during the Lunar New Year and Qingming Festival. The shift of farmers towards other crops like durian and jackfruit, coupled with salinity and drought challenges, has led to a reduced dragon fruit cultivation area.
Vietnamese dragon fruit is now reaching markets beyond China, including Thailand, Cambodia, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and South Korea.
