In a strategic initiative, a nine-person delegation from Uganda, led by Mr. Odrek Rwabwogo of the Exports and Industry Advisory Committee, visited Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, aiming to promote Uganda as a key supplier of agricultural products to China. The delegation's visit culminated in a meeting with over 80 Chinese buyers and investors from sectors such as agriculture, mining, and education, held at the Oriental Resort Hotel near Shenzhen. Rwabwogo praised China's economic development and underscored Uganda's capacity to supply agricultural commodities to meet China's demand.
During discussions, Prof. Liu Jisen from the Institute of African Studies emphasized the need for Ugandan producers to ensure sustainable supply chains and meet China's standards through long-term partnerships and skill enhancement. Despite Uganda's duty-free access to the Chinese market, trade volumes have been modest. Rwabwogo highlighted measures by the Ugandan government to overcome trade barriers, improve phytosanitary standards, and enhance production through the Parish Development Model. The visit also included engagements with Chinese manufacturers, with CN Light Technologies expressing interest in investing in Uganda.
