CompoPac presents cellulose net in French colors for the Olympics

"The question is not if, but which countries will follow suit"

In light of this year's Olympics in Paris, German packaging specialist CompoPac has developed a cellulose net in the three colors of the French national flag. After extensive sampling, the company based in Leutershausen is now on the verge of its first deliveries. "Primarily, we are talking about nets for garlic and onions, which we offer in both a small and a larger size. However, we have found that the smaller the net, the better the colors of the flag are visible. Accordingly, about two-thirds of the orders so far have been for the smaller version," explains Michael Bandel, Managing Director of CompoPac.

With this new concept, CompoPac also taps into the national pride in France. Bandel: "There is not only immense pride in hosting the Olympics in France but also in the French nationality, culture, and thus in agriculture as well as fruit and vegetable products of French origin. Therefore, we do not rule out that the packaging will continue to establish itself even after the Olympics."

The cellulose net is available in both a small and a larger size and is already being adopted by major suppliers to the French retail market. The concept could also be extended to other items, such as citrus.

The product, made of 100 percent cellulose, also matches the trend towards sustainable, biodegradable packaging, Bandel continues. Especially in terms of avoiding plastic and environmentally friendly fruit and vegetable packaging, France has been a pioneer in Europe for several years. However, the issue is also becoming increasingly prominent in other European countries, partly due to legislation and packaging regulations. "Therefore, we are particularly curious to see which countries will be open to this concept. It's not a question of if, but which countries will follow suit. Spain or Italy, for example, are good options."
