The Horticulture department and local farmers in Malda are optimistic about a significant yield of litchi this year, barring unforeseen weather events like heavy rains or storms. Despite a challenging mango season, litchi is expected to compensate to a degree.
Harvesting is anticipated in the first half of June. The upcoming weather forecast predicts rain, which should positively affect the fruit's size. Both local and Bombai varieties of litchi, with the latter constituting 75% of the district's output, are poised for growth and ripening benefits from the rainfall.
Samanta Layek, deputy director of the district Horticulture department, stated, "We can expect at least 15,000 tons of litchi production from the Malda district this season. Though mango production has already been affected heavily, litchi will be abundant."
Litchis, especially the Bombai variety, are favored for their size, color, and taste, finding markets in Bihar, Jharkhand, and Maharashtra. However, the fruit's short shelf life limits its distribution. Abdul Khalek, a local farmer, mentioned, "The trees are now overloaded with the fruits, and we are to make a good profit if the weather doesn't change drastically." Kaliachak I Block emerges as the leading litchi producer in Malda, followed by Ratua I, Ratua II, and Kaliachak III blocks.
