Thai fruit exports to Vietnam see price drop due to high supply

Thai fruit exports such as mangosteen, mini durian, snake fruit, and rambutan are currently being sold in Vietnam at prices 30-40% lower than the previous year, attributed to an increased supply.

According to a shop owner in Ho Chi Minh City, the cost of mangosteen and langsat ranges from VND55,000-60,000 per kilogram, and rambutan is priced between VND45,000-60,000. Similarly, the prices for premium Thai fruits like snake fruit and mini durian have seen a decrease of 40%, with snake fruit selling for VND60,000-70,000 and mini durian for VND60,000-130,000.

The influx of Thai fruits into the market has been facilitated by a doubled supply from the previous year, thanks to bountiful harvests. This has led to their prices falling sharply. Additionally, the quality of Thai fruits this year has surpassed that of Vietnamese counterparts, which have suffered from poor harvests.

Factors contributing to the decline in local fruit production include halved mangosteen production in Binh Duong Province and a 20-40% drop in durian production in the Mekong Delta due to adverse weather conditions. Furthermore, the shift of farmers away from cultivating rambutan, citing low profitability, has affected the local fruit market. This year, the cost of shipping has decreased by 20-30%, with many importers opting to transport fruits from Thailand via road through Cambodia to reduce expenses. In the first four months of 2024, Vietnam's import of fruits and vegetables amounted to $643 million, a 15% increase from the previous year, with Thailand's contribution being $13.3 million, up by 5%.
