Storm wipes out banana crop in eastern Chitwan, Nepal

A storm that raged on Friday and Saturday significantly impacted banana production in eastern Chitwan, Nepal, resulting in extensive damage to the crop. The Chitwan Banana Producers Association estimates the damage could amount to Rs120 million. This event has led to concerns over potential banana shortages.

Ashika Malla, a local farmer, expressed the devastating effect on his crop, which was nearing market readiness. The cleanup and replanting efforts are expected to require substantial financial resources. Bishnu Hari Panta highlighted the economic implications for farmers, particularly in light of challenges with insurance payouts. The region, which dedicates 2,370 hectares to banana cultivation, now faces a recovery period of approximately seven months. The situation is exacerbated by recent policy changes affecting insurance claim settlements for agricultural products. The government has pledged to address outstanding payments to non-life insurance companies to facilitate the resumption of the insurance scheme for farmers.
