In the latest statistical release by the National Statistical Office (NSO), the value output of 'fruits and vegetables' in India for the fiscal year 2022-23 has been highlighted as the leading category among all crop groups, capturing a 28% share in value terms. This figure surpasses that of cereals, which stands at 27%.
The report indicates a growth in the output value of 'fruits and vegetables' from Rs 2,870 billion in 2011-12 to Rs 4,340 billion in 2022-23, utilizing constant (2011-12) prices.
The crop group, which also includes pulses, oilseeds, sugarcane, spices, and medicinal plants, collectively forms a 45% share in terms of value. Within the broader agriculture and allied sectors, the crop group remains dominant with a 54% share of the gross value of output (GVO), though there has been a gradual decrease from 62% in 2011-12. The report further details that Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal lead in the highest value of output for cereals and fruits and vegetables respectively.
