Transnet has reported a 30% increase in waterside productivity at the Port of Cape Town over the past six months, amidst industry feedback indicating a resurgence of optimism regarding logistics capacity in the Western Cape. Oscar Borchards, Transnet's managing executive for the Cape region, attributed this improvement to the introduction of new equipment and policy adjustments. Despite facing criticism for being ranked as the least efficient port by the World Bank and S&P Global, Transnet disputes the ranking's criteria.
The acquisition of seven rubber tire gantry cranes and 10 haulers has been pivotal, alongside filling critical vacancies, revising staff work-hour rotations, and enhancing the Navis operating system. These measures have also led to a reduction in vessels at anchorage and a decrease in container dwell time. Borchards confirmed, "We can confirm that performance at the Cape Town Container Terminal (CTCT) has improved in 2024."
Exporters Western Cape, represented by chair Terry Gale, noted continuous weekly improvements and a positive outlook among exporters in the region. This sentiment reflects a broader recovery in confidence among Western Cape exporters, following a challenging start to the fruit export season.
