Aldi attempts to reduce food waste with crownless pineapples in the UK

In the UK, Aldi is conducting a trial aimed at reducing food waste by selling crownless pineapples. This initiative is designed to eliminate the common practice of discarding pineapple crowns by removing them during the production process. The removed parts are not wasted; instead, the crowns are recycled into animal feed, and the green leaves are utilized to support the cultivation of the next pineapple crop.

This approach is expected to decrease food waste by approximately 1,400 tonnes each year and also reduce the use of cardboard by 187 tonnes, as more pineapples can be packed into boxes without their crowns. Liz Fox, National Sustainability Director at Aldi, stated, "At Aldi, we are committed to finding sustainable solutions that benefit both our customers and the environment. This trial of crownless pineapples is just one of the latest innovative changes we're testing out to minimize waste and reduce our carbon footprint."
