Costa Rica is the foremost exporter of pineapples globally

Costa Rica has emerged as the foremost exporter of pineapples, with a total export volume reaching 2,059,352 tons. This achievement is attributed to the nation's optimal climatic conditions, the application of contemporary agricultural methodologies, and substantial investments in the sector. The quality of Costa Rican pineapples has garnered them a favourable reputation in principal markets such as the United States and the European Union, thereby playing a crucial role in enhancing the country's economic landscape by providing employment opportunities and supporting the livelihoods of rural communities.

In terms of production, Costa Rica has reported an output of 2.9 million metric tons of pineapples. This figure contributes notably to the worldwide production, which stands at 29.4 million metric tons. The country's dominant position in pineapple cultivation is sustained by its advantageous growing conditions and the adoption of advanced agricultural practices, ensuring a consistent supply to international markets.

The success of Costa Rica in the pineapple export arena is underpinned by several factors, including its ideal climate conducive to year-round cultivation, the utilization of modern farming techniques for efficient growth and harvesting, and the investment in agriculture by both the government and private entities. Costa Rican pineapples find their way to various global destinations, with the United States being the largest market, followed by the European Union, and extending to countries in Asia and the Middle East.

While the pineapple industry significantly contributes to the economic vigor of Costa Rica, it also encounters challenges such as environmental sustainability, labour conditions, and international competition. Addressing these issues remains imperative for the future prosperity of the sector.
