Jamaican Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries & Mining reports damage from Hurricane Beryl

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries & Mining in Jamaica has reported damage to facilities and agricultural projects following Hurricane Beryl. The ministry emphasized its commitment to recovery and support for the affected sectors.

Infrastructure challenges were noted, including fallen trees on the ministry's compound and flooding in its main building. Despite these hurdles, staff turnout was notable. The ministry is working on debris clearance and restoring facilities. Communication disruptions and blocked roads across parishes have been significant due to fallen trees and poles.

At the Bodles Research Station, the collapse of one Citrus Budwood House and damage to a parent plant house were reported, alongside total loss of commercial crops and a packing shed. The Banana Board has initiated assessments of crop damage, particularly severe in Portland and St. Mary. Additionally, a daily paid worker lost his house to a fire, and the Banana Board office is facing minor damages.

Recovery efforts are underway across the affected areas, with ongoing evaluations to determine the extent of the damage and associated costs. The ministry is coordinating with farmers and stakeholders to facilitate recovery and resume operations.
