In Quảng Ngãi, a province in the central region of Vietnam, a pilot farming initiative focused on cultivating MD2 pineapples has culminated in its inaugural harvest. Initiated to elevate the economic status of local farmers and indigenous communities, the project has allocated a 500 sq.m area within Sơn Tây District's Nước Tang Village for this purpose. The venture aims to transition from traditional low-yield crops to the more lucrative MD2 pineapple variety.
The proprietor of the farm, Đinh Văn Mong, reported a yield exceeding 3.5 tonnes from the plot. He noted the MD2 pineapple's compatibility with the region's climatic and soil conditions, highlighting its thinner skin, enhanced juiciness, and sweeter flavour compared to conventional pineapples. The fruit's market value ranges from VNĐ12,000-15,000 (US$0.46-0.58) per kilogram, with expectations of earning around VNĐ5.5 million (US$214.5) per harvest cycle.
Đinh Trường Giang, vice chairman of the provincial People's Committee, remarked on the model's role in boosting farmer incomes and stimulating economic development. Efforts are underway in Sơn Tây District to promote MD2 pineapple cultivation through optimal farming practices, new technique training, and establishing connections with potential buyers.
