Despite the general shortfall in vegetable consumption among Australians, a notable shift is occurring at the supermarket checkout, with an increased number of consumers opting for Brussels sprouts. This vegetable, once relegated to an unwelcome side dish at family gatherings, is experiencing a resurgence in popularity.
According to Hort Innovation Australia, there has been a substantial 53% growth in the brussels sprout sector over the past year, marking it as the vegetable with the highest growth in value for 2022/23. "We've seen a massive growth in the category — a 53 per cent surge in the last 12 months," stated Anthony Kachenko, general manager for production and sustainability research and development at Hort Innovation Australia. He further highlighted the versatility of Brussels sprouts, which can be enjoyed fried or raw, contributing to their increasing appeal amidst a broader push for enhanced vegetable intake.
