Harvest season for blackcurrants begins in Issyk-Kul region, Kyrgyzstan

The harvest season for blackcurrants has started in the Issyk-Kul region, Kyrgyzstan, with an abundant crop leading to lower prices.

The current buying prices for blackcurrants range from 1.6 to 1.7 euros per kilogram. Local varieties dominate the market, and the price varies by 0.1 euro depending on the berry size.

In early 2023, prices began at 1.9 euros and increased to 2.2 euros due to cold weather during the flowering season, which negatively impacted the crop. This year, favourable weather conditions have resulted in a good harvest.

The harvested blackcurrants are distributed to Tokmok and Bishkek, with some exported to Russia and Kazakhstan. Market traders in Karakol receive produce from across the Issyk-Kul region. Issyk-Kul blackcurrants are highly valued in Russia and Kazakhstan, but prices fluctuate daily based on the efficiency of border crossings. Slow crossings can lead to lower prices.

Currently, redcurrants cost 0.8-0.9 euros per kilogram. There is also a high demand for cherries. This year, there are plenty of cherries, and prices are low. Last year, cherries were 0.9 euros per kilogram, but this year, they are only 0.2-0.3 euros.

Gooseberries are priced at 1.3 euros, with red gooseberries being 0.1-0.2 euros more expensive.
