Farmers in Hung Yen's Red River Delta province are gearing up for the longan harvest season beginning next month. The Quyet Thang speciality fruit cooperative in Tan Hung commune, with over 30 hectares dedicated to longan cultivation, anticipates a yield of approximately 150 tonnes this year. Established in 2017 by 17 households, the cooperative's longan was the first from Hung Yen to reach the EU market in 2020, adhering to VietGAP standards.
Promotional efforts and farm tours are part of the cooperative's strategy to showcase their produce to a wider audience. The adoption of organic farming practices has been a focus for many local farmers, enhancing the safety and quality of longan products for both domestic and international consumers. According to Nguyen Van Trang, Deputy Director of the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Hung Yen boasts around 5,000 hectares of longan orchards, with 1,700 hectares meeting VietGAP standards. This represents about 34% of the total cultivation area, with several products recognized under the OCOP programme. Hung Yen city alone has over 500 hectares of VietGAP-certified longan orchards, and 10 of these have received OTAS certificates.
