In the central North Island, near Palmerston North, Andrea and Alan Buchanan operate a Brussels sprout farm covering nine hectares and a packhouse for Pams 400 gram packs destined for Food Stuffs North Island. Despite favourable growing conditions this season, the Buchanans report challenges in moving product due to an abundance of competitively priced vegetables.
The market has seen a shift, attributed to a successful growing season across various vegetable categories, leading to an oversupply and subsequently lower prices. This has affected consumer purchasing patterns, with many opting for alternative vegetables, resulting in slower Brussels sprout sales. Currently, consumers face prices around $11 per kilogram for loose Brussels sprouts at Woolworths, while a Pams pack costs approximately $5.79 at Pak'n Save.
The Buchanans are considering mulching unsold stock by September if sales do not pick up. Despite historical prejudices against Brussels sprouts, there is a growing awareness and appreciation for the vegetable, especially among keto enthusiasts and in Auckland's culinary scene. Innovations in Brussels sprout preparations, such as shaved variants for coleslaw or stir-fries, are gaining traction. Additionally, trends in Australia, where Brussels sprouts are experiencing rapid growth in popularity, including unique product offerings like sprout-filled chocolates, are closely monitored by the Buchanans.
