About 4,500 grocery workers in the Portland, Oregon, area could authorize a strike over what its union is calling a breach in contract. The United Food and Commercial Workers 555, which represents 35,000 grocery employees in Oregon, Southwest Washington state, and Idaho, said workers at Fred Meyer will vote on the option to strike on August 13. Fred Meyer is a subsidiary of Kroger.

Poland's largest supermarket chain hit by soaring wage bill, says CEO
Higher wages and keener pricing are cutting into the margins of Poland's biggest supermarket chain, Biedronka. Biedronka's earnings per share before tax (EBITDA) margin for the first half of 2024 fell from 8.5% to 7.6% compared to last year, according to the Portuguese-owned retailer. "Our lower margins are the effect of raising wages for our shop and warehouse staff", Luis Araújo, the CEO of Biedronka's owner, Jeronimo Martins, said in an interview with the Polish business daily Puls Biznesu.
