Vegetable prices rise in China due to adverse weather

In response to recent surges in vegetable prices across China, attributed to adverse weather conditions, markets have initiated the provision of discounted vegetables to aid in market stabilization. A notable instance is observed in the vegetable wholesale market located in Changxing County, Huzhou City, Zhejiang Province, where merchants have reported incremental price hikes for a variety of vegetables since the onset of July. Local narratives echo a marked increase in vegetable prices, particularly green leafy types, attributed to a persistent heatwave with temperatures soaring above 40 degrees Celsius.

One wholesaler highlighted the scarcity of local vegetable production in Changxing County, with the majority of market offerings being sourced from Anhui, Henan, Shandong, and other regions. These areas have experienced a decline in vegetable output due to the combined effects of high temperatures and precipitation, contributing to the price escalation. Nonetheless, an anticipated improvement in supply by September is expected to ease the price increases.

Shanghai's markets are combating the price rise with the introduction of discounted vegetable schemes. In Xuhui District, vendors are actively promoting discounts, aligning sales prices with purchase costs, a move welcomed by consumers aiming to economize on their purchases.
