Cherry and specialty tomatoes are popular. The distinctive tomatoes fetch good prices, often substantially higher than traditional loose or vine tomatoes. Compared to last July, prices for cherry and specialty tomatoes were lower in both the Netherlands, Spain, Italy and France. This is according to a new update of the European Commission's tomato dashboard.
Average kilogram prices in the popular tomato category vary widely. At €4.61 per kilo, tomatoes in France are by far the most expensive. In the Netherlands, they fetched an average of 2.08 euros last month, while in Spain 1.50 and in Italy 1.52 is paid on average for a kilo.
With such prices, prices are still above the average tomato price realised in July. €1.28 per kilo is the EU average. This is, in contrast to the overall troublesome month of June, again slightly above the five-year average.
In the Netherlands, the average kilogram price for cherry and specialty tomatoes is still 73 per cent higher than the five-year average. The situation is different for Spain, Italy and France. In Spain prices are 15 per cent below this, in France 8 per cent and in Italy prices are exactly at the five-year average.
The biggest price deviation compared to 2023 is recorded in Spain, where the price is 37 per cent lower compared to last July. In the Netherlands, the price is 16 per cent lower.
