Pedro Juárez, commercial director of Nalans Citrus:

"We have become the largest supplier of exotic citrus fruits with a Spanish organic certification"

Nalans Citrus, a Spanish company fully specialized in exotic citrus fruits, has achieved a significant milestone by obtaining organic certifications for its flagship products: finger limes, yuzu and Buddha's Hand grown in Europe.

"After more than three years working on this project, we are happy to have obtained a European organic certification for our most emblematic products, which we'll already be able to offer this season," says Pedro Juárez, commercial director of Nalans Citrus. "We are now the largest supplier of exotic citrus fruits with a Spanish organic certification. European consumers appreciate local products, because they offer higher quality standards than those from third countries," he says.

"The organic market has experienced significant growth in recent years, and exotic citrus are no exception. Consumers are increasingly looking for organic options, and the demand for products such as finger limes, Buddha's Hand and yuzu has increased significantly," says Juárez.

Although last year there was a certain decline in the demand of more commodified organic products due to their higher price in an economic context marked by inflation, Pedro Juárez says that "exotic citrus have a different consumer profile, not influenced by this situation. Even if some didn't ask for it, we are still going one step further in adding value for our clients in the catering and wholesaler sectors, gourmet stores or supermarket chains."

Organic certifications are not only good for the environment, but also represent a competitive advantage in the market. With this certification, Nalans Citrus can strengthen its presence in leading markets for organic products, offering finger limes, Buddha's Hand and yuzu that meet the quality and sustainability requirements of the most demanding customers.

"Bringing yuzu from Japan, with a high carbon footprint and post-harvest treatments applied to the fruit, isn't the same as working with a product grown in Spain, which is closer and thus more environmentally-friendly," says Juárez. "I believe that being able to offer these products organically is going to be an extra motivation for our clients."

The process to obtain a organic certification is rigorous and requires an ongoing commitment to sustainable cultivation practices. Inspectors check every aspect of the production to ensure that organic standards are met. This includes the use of organic techniques, proper soil and water management and the protection of natural resources. "We have worked hard with the producing companies to meet all the requirements and are proud to have achieved this milestone," says Juarez.

Since 2016, when it was founded, Nalans Citrus has remained at the forefront in collaborating with growers in the production process of exotic citrus fruits, which are mainly intended for France, the Netherlands, the UK, Scandinavian countries such as Norway or Sweden, as well as the domestic market.

The company has developed advanced cultivation techniques for growers and uses 100% recyclable packaging, which has allowed it to considerably reduce its carbon footprint. Commercial Director Pedro Juárez says: "Our mission is to enrich our gastronomy with unique and environmentally-friendly products."
