Vietnam and US advance in agricultural cooperation for new fruits

On August 28, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam, under the leadership of Deputy Minister Hoang Trung, engaged with the US Department of Agriculture. The delegation met with Deputy Minister Mr. Jason Hafemeister and representatives from relevant agencies. The engagement focused on facilitating market access for Vietnamese fruits, enhancing bilateral cooperation in plant protection, and promoting sustainable agricultural practices and emission reduction efforts.

The discussions yielded mutual satisfaction regarding the export of US peaches and nectarines to Vietnam and advanced the technical prerequisites for Vietnamese passion fruit exports. Progress was noted in the import review process for US mandarins into Vietnam. Mr. Jason Hafemeister highlighted the unparalleled level of cooperation with Vietnam compared to other regional partners, committing to further technical collaboration and improved regulatory capabilities in pest control and crop improvement.

Earlier interactions with the US Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service saw commendations for efforts to diversify market access and enhance pest control measures. The countries concurred on finalizing technical discussions to permit Vietnamese passion fruit imports into the US and initiated reviews for additional products like seedless limes, guavas, and jackfruit. Agreements were also reached on pest lists and subsequent steps for reviewing US mandarins, plums, lemons, pomegranates, among others.

This development marks a notable progression in agricultural cooperation between Vietnam and the US, emphasizing plant quarantine and the export of agricultural commodities.
