Worm infestation hits melon crops in Badghis, leading to losses

Farmers in Badghis, Afghanistan, are reporting substantial losses due to worm infestations in their melon crops. The issue, exacerbated by economic challenges, has prevented farmers from purchasing the necessary fertilizers and insecticides to protect their fields, leaving their crops at the mercy of pests. The damage inflicted by the infestation is estimated to exceed 10 million Afghanis (around $130,000).

According to local farmers, the situation has forced them to sell their produce at significantly reduced prices. "We were forced to sell our melons for 10 to 15 Afghanis each to prevent them from spoiling," shared Hassan, a local farmer. The lack of intervention from local authorities and aid organizations has been a point of contention, with calls for increased support and training to combat pest infestations more effectively.

The economic strain has made it difficult for farmers to maintain their crops. "We simply can't afford to spray our fields with pesticides every week," one farmer remarked, highlighting the financial barriers to implementing effective pest control measures. The region, known for its melon and watermelon production, faces significant challenges without the necessary support and resources.
