The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Kenya has exposed a new method employed by drug traffickers to smuggle narcotics. In a recent incident, a trafficker in Siaya was found attempting to transport a package to Mombasa, ingeniously concealing the cargo within a nylon sack filled with raw bananas. The DCI stated, "In the ongoing battle against trafficking in narcotics, smugglers are constantly finding new tricks to outsmart the authorities and hide their illegal goods." The discovery was made when an attendant at the booking office became suspicious of the package left by the trafficker, who disappeared shortly after. Law enforcement was notified, leading to the uncovering of 245 long rolls of cannabis sativa, hidden beneath the bananas, weighing a total of 17.5 kilograms.
The narcotics were immediately secured by the Siaya Police Station, with efforts to apprehend the trafficker ongoing. The DCI has reiterated its dedication to combating narcotics trafficking, highlighting the evolving strategies of smugglers. In related developments, the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) and DCI, in a collaborative effort, recently intercepted 40,971 litres of smuggled ethanol, concealed as imported molasses, preventing a tax loss of over Ksh 20.5 million. Additionally, a drug trafficker was arrested at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) for attempting to smuggle 1,080 grams of cocaine, ingeniously hidden within personal belongings.
