Nepal has initiated the export of fresh vegetables to Qatar, marking a significant development in agricultural trade between the two countries. The first shipment, facilitated by a Chinese foundation's agriculture promotion program, was dispatched from Kathmandu on a Himalaya Airlines flight. This program, supported by the China Foundation for Rural Development (CFRD), focuses on the cultivation of green chilis, flat beans, and bitter gourds in Dakshinkali municipality, Kathmandu district.
The initiative aims to export approximately 30 tons of fresh vegetables to Qatar within a month, as stated by Zou Zhiqiang, director of CFRD's Nepal office. The move has been welcomed by local officials and international representatives alike, highlighting the potential for further agricultural collaboration. Mohan Basnet, mayor of Dakshinkali, emphasized the encouragement this project provides to local farmers, while Qatar's Ambassador to Nepal, Mishal bin Mohammed Ali Al Ansari, expressed Qatar's interest in continuing to import Nepal's organic produce.
Wang Xin, charge d'affaires at the Chinese embassy in Nepal, reiterated China's commitment to supporting Nepal's agricultural sector and economic growth. This venture not only strengthens Nepal-Qatar relations but also showcases the impact of international cooperation in enhancing agricultural productivity and export capabilities.
