Surge in supermarket ads with fruits leading at 51%

Autumn marks the arrival of apple harvest season in the US, offering a variety of apples for consumption over the period. Additionally, grapes and bell peppers are more prominently advertised during this time. Grapes serve as a nutritious option for snacking during football games, and bell peppers are utilized to enhance the flavor of various dishes.

In this report, an overview will be given of the advertised prices for specialty crops products at retail supermarket outlets during the period from 7 September 2024 until 19 September 2024.

Total ad numbers this week were 302,585, a 5% increase from last week's total of 289,351. The total for the same week last year was 11% lower at 272,431. The total number of ads broken out by commodity groups: fruit 154,271 (51% of all ads), onions and potatoes 23,797 (8%), vegetables 119,864 (34%), herbs 3,288, ornamentals 2,535, and hemp 2,118. The number of ads for organic produce was 40,859, 14% of total ads.

The following are the prices of major advertised items (3,000 plus ads) this week, compared to the same week last year. Significant increases in price for fruit this week were Yellow Flesh Peaches at 10%. Significant decreases in fruit included Navel Oranges (3 lb bags) at 24%, Grapes (Black seedless) at 13%, and Gala Apples (3 lb. bag) at 11%. There were no significant changes in price for potatoes and onions this week. Significant increases in price for vegetables this week included green bell peppers at 27%. There were only significant decreases in price for cilantro (per bunch) at 18% this week.
