Cold storage fees for apples lowered in Kashmir amid production dip and rising competition

Cold storage unit holders in Kashmir have lowered their fees for apple storage in response to a decrease in apple production and an increase in competition among storage facilities. This season, the apple industry has faced challenges, leading to a reduction in the utilization of storage services by growers. According to reports by KNO, last year's sales did not meet expectations, contributing to the current situation where more cold storage units are operating, yet fewer apples are being produced.

Aabid Ahmad, associated with a local cold storage facility, mentioned that the competition and reduced apple production have driven the storage rates down. The previous charge of Rs 2 per kilogram per month has been adjusted to Rs 1 or Rs 1.20 to draw more customers. This adjustment is seen as a way to support apple traders and mitigate costs in a year of lower production. Cold storage plays a critical role in preserving apple quality during off-seasons, allowing for strategic market entry.

The adjustment in storage fees is also a response to a change in grower behavior, with fewer booking storage space in advance compared to previous years. Storage unit holders are now offering more competitive rates to encourage utilization of their services. They also emphasize the importance of quality improvement and the adoption of modern agricultural practices among growers to ensure future profitability and yield enhancements.

With approximately 300,000 metric tons of apples currently stored in Controlled Atmosphere (CA) storages across Kashmir, the region's apple industry is significant. It typically produces over 2 million metric tons annually, impacting around half of Kashmir's population either directly or indirectly. The cultivated area spans over 350,000 hectares, highlighting the apple industry's extensive reach and importance in the region.
