Mao Shan Wang durians remain a Malaysian brand until 2034

Malaysia has successfully renewed the local intellectual property (IP) protection for the Musang King durian, known in Singapore as Mao Shan Wang, extending its certification until March 12, 2034. The renewal, confirmed by the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO), ensures the exclusive branding of this durian variety to Malaysia, as highlighted by Agriculture and Food Security Minister Mohamad Sabu. During a press event in Serdang, Selangor, for the launch of a Durian Technology Package book, the minister emphasized the registration of the Mao Shan Wang under a geographical indication (GI) since March 13, 2014.

A GI signifies products with a specific geographical origin and qualities or a reputation stemming from that origin, as defined by the World Intellectual Property Organisation. This designation is crucial for agricultural products, foodstuff, and other items, allowing rightful users to prevent misuse by third parties whose products do not meet the set standards. The renewal aims to protect the durian's reputation and quality, recognizing its growing popularity abroad, especially in markets like China. Malaysia, having started exporting fresh durians to China on August 24, sees this as an opportunity to bolster its position as a durian exporter, with recent shipments totaling about 40 tonnes. The high demand in China for Mao Shan Wang durians, despite their premium price, underscores the importance of maintaining quality and authenticity, safeguarded by IP and GI registrations.
