Christophe Artero, FDA International

"Kawane apples have a lot to offer to international clients"

For the 2024 edition of Fruit Attraction, FDA International has decided to showcase its new apple sold under the name Kawane. According to company director Christophe Artero, this two-tone variety has a number of advantages for export markets. "We started selling it two years ago. We tested it with a supermarket chain and the feedback was very positive, so we decided to present it in Madrid this year by creating a booth dedicated to it."

A sweet apple that travels well
Destined for distant markets such as Central America, the Middle East and Asia, Kawane is a "very red, very bright, washed and non-striped" apple. It is unique in the way it combines high sugar content and excellent firmness. "Generally, very sweet apples are less firm. It is quite rare for apples to combine these two factors. This is a major advantage for export markets, as the apple can travel over long distances, which have become even longer due to the current sea freight problems. At the same time, it meets the expectations of international clients who are particularly fond of sweet apples. Since it holds well during transport, there is very little depreciation or loss of merchandise, with a high turnover, which is very attractive to retailers."

The Kawane stands out in an ultra-competitive market
A sweet apple that travels well is what FDA International wanted in order to better navigate export markets that are even harder to penetrate these days. "On international markets, competition is increasingly fierce, with a fragmentation of clients and suppliers. In this ultra-competitive market, we had to move away from the classic varieties and find a gem that stands out from the crowd. Given the initial results, we want to go even further and develop it in other supermarket chains."

Why Kawane?
A great deal of thought went into the promotion of this variety on foreign markets. "We chose to call this apple Kawane in reference to the Caouanne, a species of sea turtle that is now highly endangered. Turtles are discreet, much like our company's policy. They are beautiful and they travel the oceans just like this apple variety. As we specialize in marine products, we liked the parallel with this peaceful turtle crossing the oceans."

FDA International and Kawane will be present at Fruit Attraction (Hall 6, Booth A08).
