Wolter Koops expects to occupy new building in early 2025

“This expansion means we can further provide the speed and flexibility today’s retailers demand”

Dutch logistics provider Wolter Koops is busy constructing a new building on its existing premises. This expansion, which will be realized alongside the current facilities, should further help the company optimize its processes towards Germany. It is in The Fresh Park in Venlo, the Netherlands, and acts as Wolter Koops's 'gateway to Germany', essential for its fruit and vegetable distribution.

"We supply German retail seven days a week, collecting products from large Dutch, Belgian, and German growers and grouping them in Venlo. We also store produce at the customer's desired temperature and offer services like quality control, order picking, and empties management," says Rob Riezebos.

Founded in 1961, Wolter Koops is a major player in international temperature-controlled transport and logistics. The company, which began with a single truck, now has branches in the Netherlands, Germany, and Poland. It transports and distributes fresh produce daily to European wholesalers and retailers. It also offers additional logistics services such as groupage, cross-docking, warehousing, and packaging and supply chain management.

Wolter Koops's Venlo branch focuses mainly on fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as flower and plant logistics, but other products like cheese, butter, meat, and frozen goods are included in their portfolio. By expanding its existing facilities, the total area grows to 22,000m2, giving the company access to even more cold stores for direct deliveries to German retail.

The logistics company's speed and flexibility are distinctive. That is partly thanks to its fleet of some 1,100 trucks. It is responding to the trend of just-in-time delivery, which allows retailers to operate without stock. That demands the precise timing of deliveries to avoid empty shelves, something Wolter Koops excels at due to its size and operational efficiency.

Wolter Koops is also making strides regarding sustainability, including winning its third Lean and Green star for reducing its CO2 emissions. Its new facilities are being built sustainably, with solar panels and other technologies to achieve the BREEAM Excellent label.

Despite construction delays caused by nitrogen issues, the company expects to start using the new building in January 2025. It will not only increase operational capacity but also contribute to the Wolter Koops's sustainability goals. With this expansion, the logistics provider continues its steady growth, focused on serving clients optimally with the speed and flexibility that today's retail market requires.
