In the recent days, Chandpur district in Bangladesh has experienced extensive damage due to severe rainfall, affecting roads, culverts, residential structures, and agricultural sectors. The Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) in Chandpur reports that the cultivation of Aman paddy and vegetables, spanning 21,788 hectares, has been severely impacted, with the anticipated yield now compromised. Approximately 60% of Aman crops and vegetable fields have suffered due to this adverse weather event, with 1,347 hectares of Aman paddy and 107 hectares of vegetable fields notably damaged on October 4 and 5.
Farmers in the region, including Hanif Patwary, Mangal Khan, Babul Gazi, and Ayub Khan, express concerns over the financial losses incurred, highlighting the damage to Aman seedbeds caused by waterlogging from the heavy rainfalls. Additionally, the Chandpur Natunbazar-Puranbazar Connecting Bridge, a critical infrastructure for local commerce and transportation, experienced partial collapse due to the incessant rain, disrupting daily activities and posing risks to commuters.
Shah Md Shoyeb, chief weatherman at the Local Weather Observatory Centre, recorded 277 mm of rainfall on Friday, marking the season's peak. This abnormal precipitation has led to the submersion of educational facilities' grounds, affecting school operations. The collapse of the bridge's approach road at Puranbazar has created significant commuting challenges, with local authorities yet to address the situation effectively.
Furthermore, the heavy rainfall on October 4 and 5 has gravely affected around 100 families in Nij Ghasstola village, causing the collapse of newly-constructed tin-shed houses. The estimated financial loss for the homeowners is around Tk two million (20 lakh). The Bayek Bazar Road in Sachar union of Kachua upazila has also suffered damage, complicating transportation for hundreds of vehicles and creating additional hardships for the local community.
