Good and early start for Italian Divino persimmons

The harvest and marketing of Divino persimmons began in the first half of October, in line with the forecast, partly because the weather in September was colder than usual.

"We started on Monday 7 October with the delivery of the first six pallets to the wholesale markets of southern Italy, and in the next few days we will also deliver to the markets of northern Italy. The operators are asking us for persimmons every day." explains Francesca Gallicchio, managing director of Gallicchio Frutta, the company that created the Divino - Il kaki italianoâ„¢ brand.

"We began to pick the fruit in smaller sizes, which had already reached a more homogeneous colour. The dry summer made persimmons sweeter than normal."

The quantities harvested will gradually increase in the coming days, allowing the company to reach foreign markets. "There is great enthusiasm not only in Italy," adds Gallicchio. "We have buyers from Austria, Germany and Eastern Europe requesting express delivery, but we expect to be able to begin deliveries by the middle of the week, when we will also begin processing in the new 2-kilo brand crate that is currently in great demand by supermarket chains. However, the intention is to reduce the outflow of product during the peak harvesting period, which is the whole of November, when large quantities of product are usually placed on the market, causing a depreciation in value. We do not want to sell the product when there is a surplus. Our brand was created to promote the cultivation of persimmons by bringing together the different producers in the south of the country and offering them the right remuneration."
