Dell and Moyo launch AI-powered drone to combat crop diseases in South Africa

Dell Technologies has collaborated with Moyo, a consultancy firm, to deploy an autonomous drone powered by artificial intelligence (AI) in South Africa's agriculture sector. The drone utilizes Dell Technologies' AI Factory in conjunction with NVIDIA to identify diseases in potato leaves. This innovation is aimed at improving agricultural surveillance, thereby enabling prompt action, minimizing losses, and enhancing the quality of yields. In a recent announcement, Dell Technologies highlighted its partnership with NVIDIA to enhance the capabilities of its AI Factory, encouraging customers to create AI-driven solutions.

Moyo has successfully utilized this platform to develop an AI drone solution focused on early disease detection in crops, specifically targeting potato leaf diseases. According to Dell Technologies, this technology is poised to support South African agriculture with advanced crop health monitoring capabilities. The drone features a Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) system that combines high-resolution imaging with AI to analyze leaf patterns, significantly improving disease detection accuracy.

The development process leveraged Dell's AI-ready workstations and NVIDIA's accelerated computing platform, including the NVIDIA AI Enterprise software, facilitating genAI testing and model training. This approach resulted in a final accuracy rate of 99.52 percent within two weeks. Philip Heydenrych, a director at Moyo, emphasized the importance of having a reliable partner and high-performance technology for companies utilizing AI. He highlighted Dell Technologies' role in developing the AI model for the drone and its potential to support further AI-driven solutions in South Africa's agriculture sector.
