US: Steady sales growth expected for 2024 holiday season, according to NRF
The National Retail Federation forecast that winter holiday spending is expected to grow between 2.5% and 3.5% over 2023. That equates to between $979.5bln and $989bln in total holiday spending in November and December, compared with $955.6bln during the same timeframe last year.

US: Hy-Vee acquires Webster's Marketplace in Wisconsin
Effective November 2, Midwest retailer Hy-Vee will be the new owner of Webster's Marketplace in Ripon, Wisconsin. While not initially for sale, Webster's received "a very nice, unsolicited offer from Hy-Vee" that it chose to accept, according to second-generation owner Candie Webster. "My parents, Rob and Kathy, and I are excited to announce that we have accepted an offer to purchase our family's grocery store, Webster's Marketplace", Webster said in a press release provided to the Commonwealth Ripon Press.

German discount grocer Aldi continues its rapid U.S. expansion on Thursday, October 17, with plans to open four new stores, one of which is sandwiched between a Target and a Walmart Supercenter. The newly built Aldi in Lecanto, Florida, near the intersection of W. Norvell Bryant Hwy and N. Lecanto Hwy is in the same parking lot as the newly built Target. The Walmart Supercenter is on the south side of W. Norvell Bryant Hwy. The Lecanto Aldi is the discount grocer's first store in the city and opens the same day as stores in San Diego, California, at 9340 Mira Mesa Blvd.; Florissant, Missouri, at 240 Howdershell Rd.; and Monroe, Connecticut, at 205 Monroe Turnpike.

Spar has paid tribute to convenience sector pioneer Bill Capper CBE, chairman of wholesaler Capper & Co, who died on 11 October. Based in Glamorgan, Capper & Co was established in 1901 as a grocery wholesaler and became the Spar wholesaler for South Wales in 1959, with Capper's father, John, as one of the founding directors of Spar in the UK.

UK: Smaller baskets but more visits result in steady food retail growth
Total Till sales picked up at UK supermarkets (+4.7%) in the last four weeks ending 5 October 2024, up from +4.0% in the previous month, according to new data released by NIQ. Swings in categories saw confectionery lead the pack in terms of value growth jumping +11%, followed by produce (+8.5%), meat, fish and poultry (+5.7%) and health and beauty (+5.4%).

UK: 'Shop like our nan!' Call for supermarket ban on plastic packaging for fresh goods
Supermarkets should be banned from selling fresh produce such as bananas, apples and potatoes in plastic packaging so we can go back to shopping "like our nan", according to the influential anti-waste charity Wrap.
