Philipp Breitenberger, Kiwiny:

"Consumption - the key to a successful or unsuccessful kiwifruit season"

"We have started harvesting our organic yellow-flesh Soreli Gold and green-flesh Hayward kiwifruit. This year, the season is around 10-15 days earlier than last year, which is an advantage as well as a disadvantage, as the markets are still saturated with New Zealand fruits, which has not facilitated the immediate introduction of our produce," reports Philipp Breitenberger from Kiwiny Ltd. and the farm owned by the Breitenberger brothers. Three words to describe Kiwiny are: organic, simple and young.

"We boast long-standing customers in the organic sector on a European scale, and we have already started with sales. The Brix level is adequate and the quality is there, so we are satisfied. As far as our production is concerned, fruits are of a medium-high size: 30/27. For organic produce, this is actually a super size."

"What will happen at a macro level remains to be seen. We are actually a bit worried about a drop in consumption, which could prove to be an obstacle in the coming months. In the meantime, we will see what happens. Consumption is the key to the success or failure of a season. If it remains low and prices are high, we might have some surprises during the 2024/25 marketing year, and we would be forced to drastically correct our course."

Breitenberger stresses that they have always been organic farmers, with a network of producers spanning throughout Italy from Calabria to the Veneto, and also extending to Greece. "We work as part of a network and supply niche organic produce throughout Europe, so the problem of direct competition with other players does not exist. I am of the opinion that dialogue and daily confrontation with competitor companies is important to sustain the market and prices, on a certain level."

"We grow every year as a company. Starting this season, we have an interesting overseas programme for organic kiwifruit, which is making us optimistic," concludes Breitenberger.
