New varieties of squash, melon and watermelon confirmed as some of the most popular references on the European markets. The 2024 edition of Fruit Attraction offered the seed company Med Hermes the opportunity to present its new range of melons and watermelons to the international markets.

Specifically, the mini and midi seedless watermelons in the current catalogue are Selene, a 6-8 kg tiger-skinned midi, ideal for both the domestic and export markets with top quality and productivity; Bellota, a 4-6 kg black-skinned midi, excellent especially for late transplants with uniform size, top quality and good shelf-life. Finally, Amaranta, a miniature watermelon, always seedless, with a crimson skin and small size, between 2 and 3 kg.Mini watermelon Amaranta
In melons, the focus of innovation is on cantaloupe/charantais melons with resistance to aphids and powdery mildew. In addition, the two MIM190 varieties with green skins (excellent LSL) and red flesh, ideal for early and medium transplanting, were also presented. This was followed by the high shelf-life MIM191, which has a green skin but salmon pink flesh and is suitable for late and open field planting. In both cases, the products are round in shape and weigh between 1 and 1.2 kg.
Another important innovation announced at the Madrid fair was the expansion of the team, which consists of a reorganisation of the company's roles and responsibilities.
"We welcome the agronomist Francesco Savarino to the company," says Alfredo Amoroso, the sole director of Med Hermes, "who joins a well-established technical team to take on the role of International Product Manager in the cucurbit segment. The company is entrusting him with a strategic role. We are putting a lot of emphasis on research and development of new varieties of melons and watermelons of all types, with a particular focus on premium varieties of cantaloupe/charantais melons and mini and midi seedless watermelons. At the same time, I would like to wish all the best to Andrea Restuccia, who is also an agronomist. In addition to his role as International Product Manager for Solanaceae, he will be coordinating all the company's research activities."

Restuccia, who was also at the Madrid show, adds: "With the arrival of our colleague Francesco Savarino, we are increasing our capillary development of cucurbits in all markets where we are active. We want to discover and develop new markets both in EMEA and in emerging markets such as Central and South America and Asia. The aim is to create a comprehensive and competitive catalogue and to strengthen our global presence."

For his part, Francesco Savarino thanked the company for placing trust in him and said he was "delighted to be part of the team. I have taken over a very competitive product range and I look forward to expanding it into new markets."
Meanwhile, Med Hermes Vegetable Seeds is continuing to invest and, in addition to strengthening its R&D department, plans to reinforce its sales team and internationalise the brand.
