In a discussion with Blueberries Consulting, Ernesto Pino, Fall Creek's Chilean manager, shared insights into his journey in the berry sector since 2008 and Fall Creek's efforts to adapt new genetics suitable for Chile's conditions. Despite challenges, including the initial establishment of a significant infrastructure and technology project, and the necessity of specialized training for the unique nursery and production processes, Fall Creek has focused on varietal renewal and convincing industry actors of its business potential.
The pandemic prompted a reevaluation of sustainability and adaptation to new logistics and consumption patterns, with investment-backed companies increasingly adopting new genetics for differentiation. Fall Creek's process for releasing genetics involves extensive testing for adaptability to Chile's diverse climatic and soil conditions, with promising results for varieties superior in firmness, size, productivity, precocity, and flavor.
Addressing the challenge of mechanized harvesting, Fall Creek has invested in technology to develop genetics conducive to mechanical picking, including a prototype that ensures firmness and resistance during the harvesting period. This effort is complemented by collaboration with Finefield, a Dutch technology development company, to enhance mechanized harvesting technology.
Comparing Chilean blueberries to those from other Latin American countries, the unique climatic conditions of Chile offer distinct advantages, particularly for varieties requiring cold, which contributes to a unique sweet/acid balance in the flavor profile of Chilean blueberries, distinguishing them in the global market.
